Lot 1352		1856-S S.S. Central America. PCGS graded MS-67. CAC Approved. Housed in the Gold Foil special holder by PCGS. Wonderful rich golden toning on both sides. A near perfect coin and far and away finer than any others known of this date and mint. This one came from the famous S.S. Central America shipwreck and was clearly picked up at the mint, went for an ocean voyage that extended well beyond the planned time, then recovered. Here it is today in all its splendor. This is a moderately scarce date and a prized early San Francisco quarter eagle. Perhaps 175 are known today with no more than a couple of dozen of these in mint state. This sparkling jewel is destined to be the centerpiece of any advanced collection, crossing varied interests of Gold Rush era, quarter eagles, finest knowns, San Francisco and no doubt others! Simply put there are countless reasons to buy this spectacular coin. Remember that the S.S. Central America sunk in September of 1857, so this quarter eagle had to have "been around" for nearly a year after being struck. Collecting by date was not generally common at that point, and the passengers on that doomed ship were mostly well to do prospectors that were coming back east. One has to suspect that the person that possessed this coin in 1857 had probably had it for some time, but saved it. The treasure already recovered from this shipwreck represents one of the most historic finds from right at the peak of the Gold Rush in 1857, with artificates that clearly detail many aspects that had otherwise been lost. Boldly reflective mirror fields surround the frosty devices. Exceptional eye appeal with a few hints of copper gold toning scattered about. So many of these were wiped which imparts hairlines to the surfaces, finding one so fresh and attractive is a real treat. Lot 1368		1911. PCGS graded Proof 66. A superb gem matte proof specimen. Only 191 struck and this is one of the finer examples known today. Struck in the rich greenish-gold matte finish, with bright and attractive surfaces. Free of any contact marks that distract the eye and a delightful coin to represent this type or date. The matte proof finishes were not popular with collectors at the time, but have certainly grown to be highly respected today. While the 1911 is actually one of the more available proofs -- second only the the 1908, this must be taken in a relative sense and there are certainly no more than 125 to 150 of these around today. Lot 1370		1911-D. NGC graded MS-64. Well struck throughout with intense uniform sunset golden colors. Only 55,680 pieces were struck and gems are excpetinally difficult to come by (and expensive). This handsome coin should dazzle any Indian quarter eagle collector and offers satin smooth surfaces that are wonderfully clean and full mint freshness and luster! The strike is sharp as expected, and the usual high wire rim is seen on the upper right obverse, diagnostic to this key date. Always in strong demand as the Indian quarter eagle set is one of the few collections of gold coins that can reasonably be completed, once this date is secured! Why not put this one away now? Lot 1373		1913. PCGS graded Proof 65. Only 165 struck, with less than 100 examples estimated to have survived. Struck in rich khacki to straw hues with microscopic facets throughout. These tiny facets are interlocking and sparkle like a galaxy of stars when examined under a light. The color is generally uniform on these matte proofs, and their eye appeal is more subtle than the flashy style of the prior type, but offer a seductive elegance unparalleled in our proof coinage. These were truly for connoisseurs! When found at the gem level the surfaces are outstanding and offer litte more than a few hints of gentle contact. These only come up for sale infrequently, and its often years between auctions. Collectors who understand these rarities can put together a stunning set of proofs, but it will liklely take several years to acquire all the pieces!
